Tips on Finding a Primary Care Physician

Every patient wants the same things out of a primary care physician: a doctor who is professional, knowledgeable and has a great bedside manner. One of the reasons finding the right doctor is so important is that he or she could be your doctor for decades.

But do you know what to look for in a primary care physician? Read our tips below to learn more:

  1. Contact the Office/Ask to Speak with the Doctor First: There’s no rule saying you’re not allowed to speak with the doctor or staff about your needs before scheduling an appointment. It is your health, after all. If you have questions about the doctor and practice, feel free to call. Odds are one of the staff members will be more than happy to speak with you. If you’d like, you can even visit the office in-person for a closer look.
  2. Location is Key: Whether you’re visiting your primary care physician for a routine checkup or something more urgent, you obviously don’t want to have to travel too far to reach them. But don’t just consider distance. Think about the route you’d have to take to get there. It may seem minor, but these are the type of factors to consider when finding a primary care physician. A
  3. Check Referrals: Most people will ask friends and family who their doctor is first. It never hurts to check with the people you trust and get their opinion on choosing a primary care physician.
  4. Check Online: A sign of a good physician practice (or really any type of business for that matter) is a strong and consistent online presence. Every business these days needs to be represented online, and a primary care doctor is no different. Sure, it may not seem that important, but it actually shows that they greatly care about their business and how it is represented, and that they pay attention to detail.
