Home Health Care Qualifications

Home health care provides a variety of services, including skilled nursing care, physical therapy, help with errands, housekeeping, and as the name implies, it is all done from the comfort of your home. While in-home care is most often associated with the elderly, anyone who needs some additional help with everyday tasks can benefit from in-home care. This includes people of any age who require ongoing care, as well as those who are recovering from an illness.

While many people can benefit from home health care, how do you qualify for home health services? See below to learn the qualifications for home health care.

How Do You Qualify for Home Health Care Services?

While just about anyone can hire home health care services for themselves or a loved one, in order to qualify for home health care through Medicare, you must meet the following criteria:

  • The patient must be under the care of a doctor and be seeing that doctor regularly.
  • A doctor must certify that the patient needs skilled nursing care, pathology services, physical therapy, and/or continued occupational therapy.
  • The patient is homebound, meaning they have difficulty leaving their home without assistance.
  • A healthcare professional has documented that they have had a face-to-face encounter with you in the required time frames.
